New Service allows you to inform multiple Financial Institutions about a death in one go
A new notification service was launched on 13 June which allows a member of the public to report the death of a family member, friend or care home resident to multiple financial institutions with the use of just one online form. See https://www.deathnotificationservice.co.uk/ and https://www.deathnotificationservice.co.uk/faq.ofml.
The Death Notification Service is similar to the “Tell Us Once” service set up by the government that lets you report a death to most government organisations in one go (see https://www.gov.uk/after-a-death/organisations-you-need-to-contact-and-tell-us-once).
The Death Notification Service says this on its website:
“About the service
“The Death Notification Service has been created to allow you to notify of a person’s death to a number of banks and building societies (financial institutions) at the same time. Our aim is to make the process quick and easy for you to inform them at a time that suits you.
“You can view the financial institutions that are involved in this service here.
“Before you start
-
If somebody has already notified us of the details of the person that has died, the service will prevent you from continuing and direct you to our contact centre if you need any further assistance.
-
If your case is particularly complicated or time-sensitive (for example, if money or property needs to be released from the estate urgently), you should discuss it with the person’s bank or building society before using the service. There’s information in the FAQs about what you can do in this situation.
-
Please take a few minutes to read the frequently asked questions (FAQs) about the service.
“…You will be contacted by the financial institutions within 10 days after you submit the notification to let you know what the next steps are.
“Creating an account
“You do not need to create an account to use this service, but we recommend that you do.
“Part of the account creation process involves sending a secure link to your email address. If you do not have access to your emails at the current time, please submit a death notification and create an account with the service when given the option to at the end of the process instead.
“If you have any difficulties creating an account please contact the Death Notification Service Helpline on 0333 2076574 from the UK or +44 121 4150965 from overseas (opening hours 08:30-17:30, Mon-Fri – excluding bank holidays).
