The Annual Report and Accounts of the Office for Legal Complaints

The Office for Legal Complaints (OLC) has just released its Annual Report and Accounts for 2017-2018 (to 31 March). The OLC oversees the Legal Ombudsman.

During 2017-18 the Legal Ombudsman accepted 7,527 cases for investigation within their legal jurisdiction.

This was an increase from 7,223 in 2016-17 and above the original forecast of 7,000 cases for the year. This 2017-2018 increase therefore represents a 4% increase from the previous year and an 8% increase above the budgeted levels.

They also accepted 1,212 cases within their claims management jurisdiction, which was a reduction on the previous year (2016-17: 2,290). This was probably due to fewer CMCs operating an up-front fee business model, which is where most complaints have been seen previously.

Wills and Probate complaints rose slightly from 2016-2017, representing some 12-13% of overall complaint volumes by area of law.
